Katharine & Peter Watts

Music Ministry
Peter and Katharine Watts are professional musicians based in Howick, and have been active members of All Saints for over thirty years. Music, and especially music for the voice, has been their passion and the driving force of their twin careers. For Peter this has meant drawing others to join in the riches of choral singing, through Auckland Choral, the New Zealand National Youth Choir, small chamber choirs and many community choirs. He has conducted Auckland Philharmonia, St Matthew’s Chamber Orchestra, Pipers Sinfonia and Manukau City Symphony. He greatly enjoys accompanying vocal and chamber music. He also works regularly as a music examiner for Trinity Guildhall and adjudicator. For Katharine her focus has been a fascination with the intricacies of the solo voice, plus the special delight of sharing this in ensembles such as the Dorian Choir, the Orlando Singers and Calico Jam. She particularly enjoys singing oratorio and devising innovative concert programmes. Her repertoire ranges from mediaeval to contemporary classical song, and she shares this through voice teaching. She has been President of the national association of singing teachers, NEWZATS, and has a busy voice teaching studio.

Together Peter and Katharine love devising creative projects, ranging from recordings of lullabies for new babies, and Bandwagon concerts in primary schools, to chamber music collaborations. Their belief in the power of the human voice has inspired them to travel nationwide, presenting unusual song programmes to raise awareness of this glorious area of the repertoire.

Since 2000 Peter and Katharine have coordinated numerous music projects at All Saints. Thursdays @ Seven concert series is their ongoing involvement, presenting more than 21 informal concerts a year to the community. The large and growing audience reflects their conviction that people have an enduring need for experiencing music.
